Everton midfielder Amadou Onana insists there are positives to be found in the team’s narrow defeat to Arsenal.
The Gunners have often fallen short at Goodison Park and Sean Dyche’s side would have been confident of continuing that tradition. This feeling may have been buoyed by Gabriel Martinelli’s opener being ruled out for offside, but it turned out to only be a temporary reprieve before Leandro Trossard’s smart first-time finish, midway through the second half.
The result saw Everton remain stuck on a single point after five league games, suffering their third 1-0 defeat of the season. While Dyche’s team were limited in attack, they remained disciplined for large parts of the game and showcased their commitment to defending as a cohesive unit.
For Onana, who captained Belgium during the recent international break, this was a sign that Everton have what it takes to clim-b the table. The 22-year-old produced a more defence-minded display than fans have become accustomed to and he praised his teammates for their success in shutting down Arsenal’s midfield, despite Mikel Arteta’s side dominating possession.
