Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly identified former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso - should he become the new manager of Liverpool this summer.
The Reds are on the hunt for a new boss after Jurgen Klopp sensationally announced that he was bringing his eight-and-a-half-year Anfield reign to a close at the end of the current season. Attention has already turned to who could replace the decorated German in the Liverpool hot seat, and the club's former midfielder, Alonso, has emerged as the hot favourite due to his rapid success in Germany with Leverkusen and his historic ties to Merseyside.
But the 42-year-old currently has a serious job on his hands in Germany, having steered Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga after not losing a game all season. The league leaders will face their stiffest examination yet when they host Bayern Munich on Saturday evening as the race for the title intensifies.

Should Alonso agree to take on one of the biggest jobs in world football at Liverpool, he could potentially be vacating his role at Leverkusen as a Bundesliga champion, but it looks like the club already has a man in mind to replace him. And according to a report by Relevo, Lopetegui has emerged as Alonso's potential successor, and Leverkusen are "pushing hard" to capture the former Real Madrid boss.
Lopetegui took over at Wolves mid-way through last season and successfully steered them away from the relegation zone, but he then left Molineux in the summer, stating "differences of opinion" with the club's board. TheRead on liverpoolecho.co.uk
