Concussed Van Rooyen sits out for Stellies

Stellenbosch captain Dean van Rooyen will miss Tuesday’s DStv Premiership clash against Moroka Swallows and is a doubt for Sunday’s return leg of their MTN8 semifinal after his horror hit on the head at the weekend.

The 26-year-old Van Rooyen was stretchered off in a neck brace and with oxygen being applied to his face in distressing scenes during their goalless draw with Lamontville Golden Arrows at Hammarsdale on Saturay.

He was pushed by Arrows’ substitute Ryan moon in the second half and fell onto the knee of his tough-as-teak teammate Sibongiseni Mthethwa, suffering a bad cut on the forehead and needed stitches while was also concussed by the blow.

Stellenbosch officials said he had not return to training ahead of the league clash against Swallows at the Danie Craven Stadium and that he was doubtful of playing on Sunday as well.

Stellenbosch take on Orlando Pirates away in Soweto on Sunday in the second leg of their cup semifinal, needing to win by two clear goas to get through to a first ever cup final appearance.

Van Rooyen is likely to be replaced on the right side of defence by Basil Mphahlele, who Stellenbosch signed at the start of the season from Baroka.
