Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will do battle in the first North London Derby of the season this weekend. Both sides have started their respective 2023/24 Premier League campaigns in excellent fashion, winning four of their first five league outings.
Before the highly-anticipated clash, the Gunners will take on PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday evening in their first UEFA Champions League match of the season, ending the north London club's six-year hiatus from Europe's elite competition in the process. Now, the officials have been appointed for Sunday's match, with Paul Tierney on VAR and Rob Jones the on-field referee.
This led to some sections of Arsenal's fanbase voicing their frustrations on social media. Here is what a select few on X (formerly known as Twitter) said.
@DeanFiori: «Paul Tierney the proven disaster class on VAR for Arsenal v Spurs. Oh dear.»
@LePhantomDennis: «Paul Tierney on VAR has already ruled out an Arsenal goal and the match hasn't even started as yet.»
@AFC_T91: «Paul Tierney VAR Disasterclass incoming.»
@precinoti: «Considering its the first North London derby this season, both sides having almost same stats and great start of the season and perhaps the biggest game of the weekend, the FA and PGMOL should have appointed some senior experienced and less controversial officials for the game.»
@savana256: «We are about to be fucked up. Why is Paul Tierney on duty during our NLD games?»
@Arrsenal1: «This referee gives me bad energy — remembered him against Southampton away last season. We were robbed HEAVILY.»
@arsenalpostman: «But what is it with paul tierney in our spurs games.»
@thecards0: «I don’t care which reff we get like it dosent effect anything but this guy let’s a lot go I remember last yearRead on football.london
