Everton fans showed their class by looking beyond events on the pitch to pay tribute to one of their own against Arsenal.
A minute of applause was planned in advance in memory of Matthew Daulby, a Goodison Park season ticket holder who was killed while on a night out in July. The tribute was scheduled for the 19th minute for the 19-year-old, who had a memorial banner unfurled in the Gwladys Street end before the kick-off.
When that moment came it coincided with what appeared to be the game's opening goal, scored by Arsenal and which hit the back of the net just as the clock struck 19 minutes. For all the disappointment and frustration, both at the potential to go behind and the belief the linesman’s flag should have been raised, all four stands rose in applause as they paid tribute even while the away team celebrated beneath them.
It was a touching moment and a poignant reminder of how there are more important things than football. The Arsenal goal, scored by Gabriel Martinelli, was later ruled out after a lengthy VAR check undertaken during the applause.
