Lionel Messi takes a dig at PSG: “I was the only World Cup winner who didn’t get any recognition.”
Lionel Messi (36) seems to have few fond memories of his time at Paris Saint-Germain. The legendary Barcelona playmaker signed with the Ligue 1 champions in 2021 for a two-year deal after the La Liga club had failed to renew his stay at the Camp Nou. During his stint in the French capital, Messi never got past the Champions League’s last 16 stage and won only one major trophy with Les Parisiens: the 2022-2023 Ligue 1 title. Evidently, Messi lifted the greatest trophy there is with the FIFA World Cup as a PSG player.
When asked by ESPN Argentina if he regrets having joined PSG in the first place, Messi remains coy on the matter. “No, it happened that way. It was not what I expected. But I always say things happen for a reason. Even though I was not well, I won the World Cup while I was here.” The Inter Miami striker then went on to say that, because Argentina beat France in the final, he did not receive the appreciation he deserves as a World Cup winner in Paris. “I was the only World Cup winner who didn’t get any recognition, but that’s OK.“
