Mikel Arteta told reporters after the win over Everton that he regretted not making a change of goalkeeper on two separate occasions during his time as Arsenal coach. It was a revelation which created plenty of discussion amongst journalists and fans as the Spaniard has effectively hinted at a drastic change in the way the goalkeeper position is thought of.
Never before has a goalkeeper been taken off for tactical reasons outside of an impending penalty shootout, not that I can recall at least, because the characteristics of one are different from the other for a specific game state. Will we see Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya swapped in-game to suit the scenario?
I am beginning to hope so because the idea of Arteta having such an original consideration in the sport would be yet just another sign of his potential as a coach. Whether it works is what will define him though should he try it and perhaps that’s the fear he had.
“I am a really young manager, I have only had three and a half years in the job and I have few regrets. It was on two occasions, that after 60 minutes and at 85 minutes in two games in this period I could have changed the keeper in that moment, and I didn’t do it.
“I didn’t have the courage to do it, but I am able to take a winger or a striker and put a central defender at the back to make a back five and hold that result. We drew those games and I was so unhappy.”
Now he faces a choice with the first group stage Champions League game on Wednesday. Should Aaron Ramsdale start this game the conversation is almost certain to become focused on David Raya becoming the league goalkeeper with the England international in for the cup competitions.
