Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has given a hilarious verdict on Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga following a mistake from the Spaniard in their Champions League clash with Napoli. The shotstopper is currently on loan with Los Blancos for the season after a serious knee injury to Thibaut Courtois.
Kepa cost the Blues a record breaking £71.6million back in 2018, joining from Athletic Bilbao as a promising option to secure their goalkeeping ranks. Some high profile errors led to questions over his ability, and eventually to the signing of Edouard Mendy, who helped secure Chelsea a second Champions League title.
There would be a tussle between the two goalkeepers for the right to be number one, but that would appear to end this summer as Mendy left for Saudi Arabia. The signing of Robert Sanchez from Brighton appeared to create competition, only for that to change quickly.
Kepa made his own move, joining Real Madrid on a season-long loan after a serious injury to Thibaut Courtois, with the hopes of making a permanent transfer in the near future. Despite having just under two-years left on his Chelsea contract, the 29-year-old appeared to cut ties with the club and the project in an interview.
«I felt it was time for a change of scenery,» he told Marca in an interview during the international break. «I wanted to stay [at Chelsea], but I felt that the project was not the right one… When Madrid calls you, everything changes. My signing was closed in just a few hours and a couple of calls.»
