Then falling behind early on a trip to an expected top-four rival, along with finding themselves again in arrears after a poor first half on their return after the season's first international break. All while trying to embrace a subtle different style of play.
It says much about how the present Liverpool are adapting that, having won only four of their first 12 Premier League matches last season, they have already matched that tally after just five games this campaign.

And the Reds have had to be quick learners with red cards, injuries and in-game formation changes meaning they have had no option but to demonstrate a mental strength and tactical nous that wasn't often apparent during the first two-thirds of last season.
