Manchester United lost out on Aaron Ramsey's services when the midfielder made the move from Cardiff City to Arsenal because the Gunners intended to play him straight away.
That's according to Dave Jones, the former Bluebirds manager who was at the helm of the Welsh club when the then youngster made the switch to North London ahead of Old Trafford. In the summer of 2008, Arsenal, United and Everton were among the clubs interested in the highly rated youngster.
Ultimately, Cardiff accepted a bid from the Gunners worth £4.8m for the then 18-year-old. Ramsey ended up spending the next decade at the Emirates Stadium.

Ramsey went on to make 369 appearances and score 64 goals for Arsenal before departing in 2019. He won three FA Cup and moved to Italian giants Juventus.
How, after spells at Rangers and French side Nice, Ramsey is set to rejoin old club Cardiff on a free transfer this summer. Jones has now rekindled the 2008 transfer that saw United have a chance of recruiting the midfielder.
Jones said that United and the Gunners were interested in Ramsey very early on in his Cardiff career. He headed to Arsenal, even though Jones wanted the midfielder to go to United.
He said that Sir Alex Ferguson would have let the midfielder head back to Cardiff on loan. However, the move to Arsenal happened because Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was prepared to play him from the start of his time in North London, rather than send him out on loan to get minutes under his belt elsewhere.
