'Champions League' player Adam Wharton has put his name in the frame for a place in England's Euro 2024 squad.
It's not uncommon for an unexpected star to secure a spot at a major tournament, and Wharton could be that surprise package following his impressive start to life at Crystal Palace. The midfielder was still plying his trade at Blackburn in the Championship until January when he made a switch to the Eagles in a deal which could potentially reach £22million, including add-ons.
At the time of his move, Palace were struggling under Roy Hodgson, who stepped down in February. However, the appointment of Oliver Glasner as his successor has been a game-changer, with Palace comfortably securing their Premier League status and claiming some significant victories, including Monday's 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United, via the Mirror.
Wharton demonstrated why he has become an integral part of Glasner's plans with a commanding performance against United, outshining another Euros hopeful, Kobbie Mainoo. Despite his youth, Wharton has also shown leadership qualities within the team. During half-time against United, he was spotted in conversation with Jean-Philippe Mateta, seemingly giving the seasoned forward several instructions.
«Second half was an excellent performance,» Glasner said of Wharton. «It shows his mentality and character that a 20-year-old guy talks to JP Mateta, but also on the other side that JP is listening to him. This is the environment that I really like as a manager.»
Despite his lack of experience, Wharton seems comfortable under the spotlight, which could boost his chances of making the trip to Germany. He also stood out in Palace's unexpected 1-0 victory at Anfield, effectively ending Liverpool's title
