TWO MATCHES to go and all Arsenal players are thinking about is Manchester. But this latest victory in their Premier League title battle with defending champions Manchester City does not mean they are obsessing about Pep Guardiola’s side slipping up. Mikel Arteta has his players solely focused on their own matches and up next is a trip to the red half of Manchester and Old Trafford on Sunday.
Arsenal talisman Declan Rice told us he would not bother watching City beat Wolves as he left the ground with friends and family, having added his side’s third to earlier strikes from Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard. Manager Arteta said he would be in front of the box in his pyjamas with his wife and kids.
Captain Martin Odegaard, however, was more likely to be watching videos of Erik ten Hag’s United and working out how he can plot a way through their midfield. The genial Norwegian explained: “We must focus on ourselves. We don’t know what other teams will do but we put on a good performance against Bournemouth, we keep putting pressure on Man City so we just must keep going and then go again.”
Arsenal cannot win the title at Old Trafford, as they did when they won the Double in 2002. Though they can stay alive in the race. Odegaard and his teammates are aware of the history.
“We have heard the stories and we have seen what has happened there, how much it meant for the club’s supporters,” Odegaard added. “It is a part of the history and it is something we want to do again. We want to make the fans happy again. It has been a big goal for a long time to win something so that’s what we are pushing for and we keep going until the end."
