Onana marks half ton in style
Given that two of his three Everton goals have now come against Burnley, Amadou Onana would be forgiven for wishing he could face the Clarets every week. But while his all-round display was commanding on his first start since the last international break, it was netting the opening goal of the evening that will ultimately loom large in memories of this match.
For the second time in six weeks, Onana scored against compatriot Vincent Kompany’s side from a corner kick. But while his effort in the Carabao Cup tie at Goodison Park was poked in from close range, this was a towering header. It was fitting that the 22-year-old rose highest given that this was a colossal display from a prodigious talent who has all the attributes to become a world-class performer.
There’s still a long way to go for the prospect who was making his 50th appearance for the club but Goodison insiders believe that he has the potential to be just as good – if not better – than Moises Caicedo who Chelsea paid an eye-watering £115million for this summer. Sean Dyche will want the supremely self-confident character’s feet on the ground though – except when set-pieces are being delivered – and one of his first acts as Blues boss was to call up his former Burnley star Steven Defour to give Onana some pointers on what is needed to become a complete Premier League midfielder. But this was a reminder that he has it in his locker to hit those heights.
