Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is already one yellow card away from facing an FA Ban just nine games into the Premier League campaign. The Gunners boss was booked in the aftermath of last Saturday's 2-2 draw against London rivals Chelsea, the second time he was shown a yellow card this season.
The new rules which were brought in this term mean that his next yellow card would result in a one-game suspension from the touchline, something that Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola had to serve last month. The former Barcelona manager had to watch his side from the stands as his side lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium.
In 2018, the global Laws of the Game introduced yellow cards for members of the club's coaching staff, with managers previously having just been sent to the stands. Players receive a suspension when they pick up five yellow cards in the first half of a campaign, or ten yellow cards at any part throughout the season.
But managers only need three bookings for a one-match suspension, with eight offences triggering a two-match ban. On the off chance that any head coach receives 16 cautions throughout a single campaign, they will then have to attend an FA misconduct hearing.
Arteta was first booked against Fulham back in August before receiving his second at Stamford Bridge last Saturday. But the Spaniard has since admitted he is keen to stamp out his theatrical touchline antics.
«I think I am changing,» he said. «If you think differently, let me know. But I have made a conscious effort. Basically, I don't want to get sent off.
