Ballon d'Or winners list in full as Lionel Messi wins eighth award and beats Bukayo Saka
Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d'Or trophy of his career on Monday. The Inter Miami and Argentina superstar crowned a terrific last year after helping his nation with the World Cup in dramatic fashion in Qatar.
Messi, who is now plying his trade in the United States with Inter Miami, won the prestigious trophy in Paris ahead of Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.
The 36-year-old played an astonishing 55 games at club level throughout the 2022/23 season. He contributed to 32 goals in 32 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG before playing a starring role in Miami's Leagues Cup success — scoring 10 goals in seven appearances.
Arsenal were represented by Bukayo Saka in the award. The England international finished 25th, ahead of the likes of Jamal Musiala, Nicolo Barella, Ruben Dias and Martin Odegaard. Former Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who has started life at Bayern Munich in sizzling form, finished 19th.
England superstar Jude Bellingham's impressive 2022/23 season saw him win the Kopa Trophy. He joins the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Pedri to win the award based on players under the age of 21.
Last year's winner Karim Benzema- who left Real Madrid for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad — finished 16th. Noticeably, there was no place for five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
