Neither Girona nor Barcelona have any margin to overtake Real Madrid for top spot in the remainder of La Liga, so Carlo Ancelotti's side are mathematically champions. The achievement came on Saturday afternoon thanks to Xavi Hernandez's side's defeat at Montilivi. On social media, shortly after the end of the Catalan derby, the blaugranas congratulated their eternal rivals on their domestic achievement.
"Congratulations to Real Madrid for the league title," reads the text published by the club on its Twitter profile. Reactions were mixed, with 'Cules' fans reproaching the club for the gesture, 'Merengues' fans jeering and other fans not getting involved in this type of online confrontation.
The new title for 'Los Blancos' caused particular heartburn in Montjuic, as it was a direct action by the 'Cules', a disappointment against a Girona side who, with 2-2 on the scoreboard, were trailing. The introduction of Portu for the second half made a big impact and the result was two more goals for Michel's side, who booked their place in the next Champions League.
Barcelona's congratulations to Real Madrid were posted on their Spanish, Catalan, English and Arabic accounts. Neither the Portuguese, French, Indonesian, Japanese nor Turkish profiles joined in, although this is probably due to the fact that these are channels of communication that are not receiving as much flow as the others. There were also congratulations from channels of other teams such as Sevilla.
