Manuel Neuer left pundits gawping after his audacious piece of skill led directly to Bayern Munich's first-half penalty against Arsenal on Tuesday night. The German goalkeeper showed all of the confidence that made him one of the world's best during the 2010s, making a mockery of the Gunners' press.
Half an hour into the Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie at the Emirates Stadium and Neuer displayed a trickery that most outfielders would have been proud of. Flicking the ball up with his right foot as Kai Havertz tentatively looked to put pressure on him, Neuer lofted a volley over the onrushing body and towards his teammate.
Within a matter of seconds, Bayern had rushed through on goal thanks to some individual brilliance via Leroy Sane. Gabriel Magalhaes was only able to foul the forward inside the area after a missed tackle from Jorginho outside the box.
Harry Kane converted the spot-kick to complete a dramatic turnaround for Thomas Tuchel's side and it was Neuer's moment of class alongside Sane's run that grabbed the attention. «Neuer, at that point there, he’s taking the mickey out of the Emirates, flicking up with his left foot,» said Rio Ferdinand during the break.
He wasn't impressed by the defending though, adding, "[Jakub] Kiwior, you have to win your one v one battle there, you can’t allow that. Once he gets beyond him there, it is all about Leroy Sane. The way he’s deceptive, his movement, he’s jinking. The Arsenal back four, I think naivety plays a part in the way they have allowed him to slide straight through there."
