'Best remote and luxury' UK staycation is only a short drive from Liverpool

The best UK staycation destination has been revealed - and it's not too far from Merseyside.

Land Rover Defender has looked into the best "remote and luxury" escapes in England, Scotland and Wales, and lucky for us, they've found the best is on our doorstep. The Lake District has been named as the best getaway in the UK, beating the likes of the Cotswolds and New Forest National Park.

The Defender Destination guide has compared the population of locations with the most highly rated five-star hotels, golf clubs, Michelin-starred restaurants, wellness retreats, hiking trails and National Trust properties. They found that the Lake District ranked best overall and stole the show when it come to luxurious restaurants and hotels.

They found that it has a whopping 10 five star hotels, 18 Michelin guide restaurants, five 5-star golf clubs, 25 luxury spas, 32 excellent hiking trials and 23 National Trust locations. That's much more than New Forest National Park which comes in second on the index, with just two five star hotels, three Michelin guide restaurants, one 5-star golf club, 13 luxury spas and one excellent hiking trail.

Known for its scenic landscapes filled with mountains and lakes, the Lake District is renowned for being perfect for adventure-goers and those looking to relax. Foodie highlights include Askham Hall, a Grade I listed 13th-century building with a cosy, Michelin star restaurant. Or dive into Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume – famous for its three Michelin stars – with a seasonally changing menu and a nearby farm supporting local produce.
