Brendan Rodgers recalls first meeting with Arne Slot before Liverpool confirmation

Brendan Rodgers has backed Arne Slot to be a success at Liverpool after tussling with him earlier this season.

The former Reds manager returned to Celtic last summer and, having already won the Scottish Premiership, will be looking to clinch a league and cup double when the Hoops lock horns with Rangers in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final.

Celtic were drawn against Slot’s Feyenoord in this season’s Champions League group-stages as they finished bottom of a group also containing Atletico Madrid and Lazio. Losing their opening match 2-0 in Rotterdam, the Hoops would at least sign off with a last-minute 2-1 win in their last outing against the Dutch outfit.

Slot was confirmed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor earlier this week, becoming Liverpool’s first ever head coach in the process as the Reds underwent a managerial search for only the second time since parting company with Rodgers in October 2015.

And boasting first-hand experience of facing a Slot side, Rodgers is confident the Dutchman will be a ‘good fit’ for Liverpool - but warned his former club to expect a transitional period as Klopp’s nine-year reign comes to an end.

“I think it is a transition,” he told talkSPORT. “When someone has been at a club for so long like Jurgen, he has his stamp all over the club, the staff, the players. He and his staff will move on, one or two players will move on.
