Enzo Fernandez 'will undergo surgery' on a groin injury and is expected to miss the remainder of the Premier League season, according to reports.
The midfielder was substituted during Chelsea's win over Everton earlier this month, but had since started in both their FA Cup defeat to Manchester City and 5-0 loss to Arsenal. According to Argentine media outlet Ole, he played those games despite suffering from an inguinal hernia and now a 'decision' has been made.
To be in contention for Copa America this summer, Fernandez has decided to go under the knife to try and recover in time. The tournament, set to be played in the United States, will get underway on June 20, with the final scheduled for July 14.
It is said that the decision was made after the Blues were knocked out of the FA Cup. Discussions are said to have been held between the club's medical staff and Argentina's national team doctors.
Ole add that the recovery process will take around three weeks before he intensifies his preparations for Copa America. Argentina rely heavily on Fernandez and want him to be fully fit.
Despite experiencing a challenging period in west London thus far, he is determined to help his country win more major silverware after Argentina lifted the 2022 World Cup trophy in Qatar.
