According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona defender Clément Lenglet is set to have a medical ahead of a season-long loan move to Aston Villa. The loan deal will not include any purchase option, meaning Villa will not have the opportunity to sign the French centre back without negotiating a fee with the Blaugrana.
Lenglet was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer transfer window, with The Athletic reporting that the former Sevilla defender was set to sign for Al-Nassr. However, following interest from Rennes this summer too, the Frenchman looks set to be playing his football at Villa Park this season. The Villians will pay 75% of Lenglet’s wages for the duration of his loan.
The 28-year-old spent last season plying his trade in the Premier League whilst on loan with Tottenham Hotspur. Lenglet played 35 times for Spurs across all competitions last season. The former French international has been made surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou this summer but Spurs have rejected the opportunity for Lenglet to return to North London with the player now on his way to Birmingham instead.
