SSE Airtricity First Division: UCD 1 - 2 Cobh Ramblers
Cobh Ramblers claimed a 2-1 fightback win over UCD at the Belfield on Monday evening to breathe new life into their play-off push.
Ramblers claimed a vital victory over Bray Wanderers on Friday and have now won three of their last four games to move to within just five points of the top-five.
Jake Doyle gave UCD an early lead, but goals from Jack Larkin and Matthew McKevitt saw Cobh record a morale-boosting success.
Making four changes from their win over Longford Town on Friday night, UCD started well and were ahead after eight minutes.
Eanna Clancy’s searching pass from deep was knocked down to Doyle after a tussle between Charlie O’Brien and Mikey Raggett. Doyle then found the net with a low deflected effort that beat Ramblers keeper Darragh Burke.
Raggett should have doubled the Student’s lead on the quarter hour after some good play from Sean Brennan played him in on goal. But with the goal at his mercy, he skied over the bar from inside the penalty area.
Alex Dunne then threatened for the hosts on the half hour mark but he was off balance by the time he shot and sent his effort over the bar.
Cobh started to grow into the game from that point on and Jason Abbott had their first effort on goal from distance that had Dara Kavanagh scrambling to save.
Their equaliser came on the stroke of half-time when Larkin scored with an improvised finish after a fine delivery from impressive full-back Cian Browne.
UCD tried to respond in the second half and went close to retaking the lead just ten minutes in when Raggett’s glancing header failed to trouble the Ramblers defensive rearguard.
