Republic of Ireland skipper Seamus Coleman admitted it was a frustrating night after the 1-0 defeat to Switzerland.
But the veteran defender felt it was an enjoyable week under interim boss John O’Shea.
The Everton man also expressed the view to keep on playing at international level beyond his 36th birthday later this year.
Having picked up the player-of-the-match award, he said after the final whistle: “It was frustrating. I think it took us a while to get to grips with the game. Then we got some instructions. We got a bit braver, pressed them a little bit more. And got ourselves a bit more organised.”
Coleman continued: “I thought we were on top from then on in. I felt we were unlucky not to score. I can’t remember them creating too much bar the free kick (goal). We pinned them back for quite a bit of the game in my opinion. I know I’m just off the pitch. That’s how it felt like. It felt comfortable in the second half. We just need to find a way to score some goals. But it’s been a good week – I have to say. A disappointing result. Never happy to lose. But it’s been a good week.”
The Donegal native also felt the two matches (following on from the draw with Belgium) had seen some progression from the Boys in Green.
“It’s always good to have new players coming in, that helps. The likes of Sammie (Szmodics) who had a good run of form at club level. They get to know what international football is all about. Obviously, it’s up to us senior players to help the younger lads. They need to know it's so important that every time we put on the green shirt, that we present our fans. Everyone gets to grips with that.
