Frank Leboeuf has slammed Cristiano Ronaldo for suggesting that the Saudi Pro League is more competitive than Ligue 1. The 39-year-old striker was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea back in November 2022 after he was released by Manchester United with immediate effect.
The Red Devils were said to have been 'furious' with Ronaldo after a TV interview with Piers Morgan caught them off guard. It was the final straw for Erik ten Hag, who wanted to cut ties with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner a few months prior.
Stamford Bridge was mooted as a potential destination for Ronaldo after Todd Boehly had been spotted met with super agent Jorge Mendes earlier in the year. Instead, the Portugal international jetted off to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Nassr.
Since touching down in the Middle East, he's scored 42 goals and provided 13assists in just 48 games. Despite many questioning the standard of the division, Ronaldo claimed that the Saudi Pro League is more competitive than the French top flight.
He said: «The Saudis are in a process that will take long, but step by step, we will reach the highest level. I believe they are going to be in the top three or four in the world. Step by step, I think we are going to reach that.
»The level right now? To be honest, I think the Saudi league is not worse than France's league in my opinion. In the French league, I think you have two, three teams with a good level. In Saudi, I think it is more competitive."
