Galway United huffed and puffed but couldn’t blow down the Drogheda rearguard on a windswept night in Eamonn Deacy Park.
There was plenty of endeavour, lots of dangerous balls in the box but no goals for the home support who braved the conditions.
In the blustery conditions, the Galway men started with the wind in their sails. An inventive early set-piece saw Conor McCormack slip Ed McCarthy through on goal. His shot skidded across the goal and just went the wrong side of the post.
David Hurley swung in a few dangerous deliveries from the right with his side enjoying the better territory. His colleagues couldn’t capitalise on a couple of early chances.
Drogheda did settle into the contest in the second quarter. Gary Deegan marshalled and distributed well at the base of midfield. Luke Heeney provided an outlet on the right as his side passed the ball well in the middle third. Frantz Pierrot and Darragh Markey had glimpses with a few through balls.
The control of the visitors was short-lived. After a brief lull in the contest, the Tribesmen piled forward again and were unlucky to retire at the break scoreless.
Their corners should have returned a goal. They swung in six dangerous deliveries in the first period that Drogheda struggled with. Stephen Walsh’s header on the half hour mark was goal-bound but for the intervention of Gary Deegan. Earlier, he had another shot blocked in a goalmouth scramble.
