France manager Didier Deschamps has said that Antoine Griezmann (32) “doesn’t get the recognition he deserves” and believes that the Atletico Madrid forward could have won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
Few have earned the level of trust that Deschamps has afforded Griezmann. He is a guaranteed starter for Les Bleus and has played 124 times for the national team, scoring 44 goals in that time. At international level, Griezmann has moved into a deeper midfield position, but at club level, he is once again enjoying a solid goal-scoring season in La Liga and is the second-top-scorer in the league with seven goals, three behind Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham (10).
The 2018 World Cup winner, however, “doesn’t get the recognition he deserves,” according to Deschamps, who notably believes that his midfielder would have deserved to have won the 2018 Ballon d’Or title. It was Real Madrid’s Luka Modric who won the title that year, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo with Griezmann only managing third.
In that year, Griezmann won the World Cup, the Europa League, and the European Supercup and scored 36 goals in all competitions. “In 2018, he could have won the Ballon d’Or given the season he had and because of the World Cup title. He would have deserved it too. To be completely honest and sincere, he maybe doesn’t get the recognition he deserves,” Deschamps told Télefoot.
