Two goals in injury time secured three points in the most dramatic fashion imaginable as Galway United came from behind to claim a stunning win over Drogheda United.
It looked like Kevin Doherty’s team were set fair to earn a third successive win on home soil, coming from behind themselves to lead the Tribesmen heading into injury time, courtesy of goals from Evan Weir and Zishim Bawa.
Given that games involving John Caulfield’s men had only seen 15 goals in total this season – eight for and seven against – there was no great expectation for goals on Boyneside. However, Rob Slevin’s early header suggested those in attendance were in store for a game that defied convention.
For just the first time this season, a Galway match featured five goals – only once before had a game even had three. Three goals in 90 minutes is beyond wildest dreams for Galway and the manner in which they won the game will make the trip back west so much sweeter.
The game, whatever the outcome, was marred by the serious injury suffered by Warren Davis in the first half. After a lengthy period of assessment, he was eventually stretched off the pitch and brought to the adjacent Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
There was deep concern for his wellbeing on the pitch and in the stands, where the teenager’s parents watched on.
Galway had taken an early lead, with Rob Slevin connected, somewhat unknowingly, with Ed McCarthy’s corner. United should have levelled through Darragh Markey before the midfielder’s box-to-box run ended in winning a free kick.
