Drogheda United’s Jack Keaney will be suspended for Friday’s trip to St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday after an appeal to overturn Monday’s red card was rejected by the FAI’s appeal’s committee.
Shamrock Rovers were coasting at 3-0 when Keaney was sent off for a tangle with Johnny Kenny went to ground despite replays suggesting there was little or no contact.
Drogs boss Kevin Doherty was understandably livid after the 4-0 defeat, adamant the incident didn’t even warrant a free-kick.
The duly activated the league’s fast-track appeals procedure for contesting red cards but the LOI officials have confirmed the decision of referee Rob Hennessy stands on the basis of it “denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity”.
Drogs sit in the relegation playoff spot but at least Keaney will be available for next Monday’s basement battle against local rivals Dundalk.
