Enzo Fernandez was spotted in tears at full-time after Chelsea secured their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The Argentine midfielder suffered a suspected thigh injury and had to be substituted during the first half against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
Callum Wilson put the visitors ahead after capitalising on Benoit Badiashile's error in defence. Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk equalised in the 92nd minute as he pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty box, slotting home past Martin Dubravka to send the game to a penalty shootout.
Kieran Trippier saw his penalty kick go wide of the goal before Djordje Petrovic leapt across to his left to deny Matt Ritchie's spot kick — sending Chelsea through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals. As the players celebrated on the pitch and applauded the home support, Fernandez was seen being consoled by Badiashile after the 22-year-old had appeared to have been crying.
It is unclear how long Fernandez could be sidelined for as Mauricio Pochettino awaits news on the extent of the midfielder's injury. After he was replaced by Armando Broja, the Argentina international headed straight down the tunnel rather than sitting amongst the substitutes.
Fernandez was later seen holding his thigh as he spoke with Pochettino at half-time. The Chelsea boss is likely to provide a fresh update on the 22-year-old's condition in his post-match press conference.
