After taking one step forward, Manchester United took another two steps back after suffering their fourth defeat in their opening seven Premier League games against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Joachim Andersen's first-half effort proved decisive on another rain-soaked afternoon in Manchester, meaning Erik ten Hag's side ended the weekend 10th in the Premier League table. United, not for the first time this season, were lifeless and uninspiring, failing to create enough to test Sam Johnstone in the Palace goal.
After much of the pre-match build-up was dominated by talk of Ten Hag possibly selecting a 4-4-2 formation, featuring a midfield diamond, he opted for his trademark 4-3-3 system. Facundo Pellistri and Marcus Rashford manned the wide areas but failed to impose themselves enough against a team that is unlikely to threaten the European spots this season.

Pellistri, who made his first start of the season in the 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich almost a fortnight ago, started for the second game running on Saturday, having started the midweek Carabao Cup triumph against Roy Hodgson's side. It was the first time in his United career that he had been awarded back-to-back starts.
But based on the limitations of his performance, it is unlikely that he will make it a hat-trick of starts against Galatasaray in the Champions League this evening. He struggled to have the same influence as when he had previously stepped off the bench in the second half of games, and it was hardly surprising when he was taken off after 61 minutes.
