The US national team suffered, but managed to maintain their mental stability and overcame two dramatic moments to beat Canada in a penalty shootout — after a 2-2 draw — to advance to the semi-finals of the 2023 Gold Cup.
But there were incidents after the final whistle, as the USMNT allegedly taunted Canada's players, leading to a brawl in the locker room. It is not yet known whether CONCACAF will take action and punish the players involved.
Not a minute of normal time had elapsed in the Gold Cup quarter-final between the USMNT and Canada, and the game had to be stopped.
The reason, an unusual one: the linesman was hit in the face by a ball at point-blank range and needed immediate medical attention. The incident stopped play for several minutes at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. After receiving medical attention, he was unable to continue refereeing the Gold Cup clash.
