Forest Green chief Dale Vince has been labelled 'an attention-seeking moron' for the so-called 'PR stunt' in appointing Hannah Dingley.
Dingley made history earlier this month when she was appointed the first female coach of a male team.
Vince promoted the 39-year-old from her role as academy boss to interim manager of the senior side.
But Dave Horseman has since been appointed as the permanent successor to Duncan Ferguson, who resigned at the end of the season.
As a result, Dingley never took charge of a competitive match at Forest Green while the Guardian report she was not even on the 100-plus list of candidates to take over on a permanent basis.
Speaking on the talkSPORT Breakfast show, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor tore into Forest Green owner Vince.
He said live on Tuesday morning: «I feel, if I am being brutally honest, that the chairman of Forest Green is an attention-seeking moron.
»I feel that he loved the limelight, it was obviously a PR stunt. He was never going to give her the job.
«It was just a PR stunt, give her a couple of weeks. Sort of like an overnight job, and then bring in someone that he was probably looking at from the start.
»I didn't like it because I wanted her to get at least 10 games and give her a good go at it.
«Not like 'okay, you are going to be interim manager. The season is about to start, let me change that'.
»I think that just sums him up, to be honest."
Co-host Natalie Sawyer interjected to ask: «Moron is quite strong?»
And Agbonlahor replied: «That's what he is.»
Dingley is set to return to her role as academy manager while Horseman has arrived from Southampton, who held a similar position at St. Mary's.
