Former Dutch international Quincy Promes arrested in Dubai
Quincy Promes was stopped at a border control in Dubai on his way home with his Spartak Moscow teammates. The player was unable to board the plane like the other players because, according to 'Telegraaf', he was immediately arrested.
The security forces of the United Arab Emirates executed the international arrest warrant for him after he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for drug trafficking. After shackling him, officers took the footballer to a police station.
A spokesman for the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office said he had no knowledge of these events. It is not known whether he is still being held.
Promes was training in Dubai ahead of the new season. Spartak Moscow face Zenit on Saturday, so the players were set to fly to Russia when Promes was arrested.
The plan was for the player to fly out that Thursday afternoon on another plane, but in the end he did not take a plane, according to 'Telegraaf'. It remains to be seen what happens to Promes, who is once again in the news, and not just for sporting reasons.
