Gary Neville has poked fun at Arsenal's complaints from the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle earlier this season after Gabriel Magalhaes opened the scoring against Crystal Palace. After a difficult few weeks, the Brazil international calmed some nerves as he rose highest to head home a deep Declan Rice corner.
The Gunners have lost to Liverpool, West Ham and Fulham in recent weeks which saw their defeats tally from the season nearly double in just a few weeks. In the first half of the 2022/23 season, Arsenal lost to RC Lens, West Ham Newcastle and Aston Villa with the latter two defeats coming in league action.
Both were 1-0 losses away from home with controversy engulfing each game but the circumstances surrounding the winning goal for Newcastle at St James Park particularly drew anger. An offside, foul and whether or not the ball remained in play were all checked by VAR after Anthony Gordon ended that crazy sequence by tapping home.
The main complaints arrived regarding Joelinton impeding Gabriel to win Joe Willock's cross which directly led to Gordon's goal. «We have to talk about the result because you have to talk about how the hell this goal stands up and it’s incredible,» Arteta said on the goal after the game. «I feel embarrassed but I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help, because it's an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed; it’s an absolute disgrace.»
As a result of his comments, Arteta was hit with a misconduct charge by the FA, however an Independent Regulatory Commission found him not guilty of breaching any rules. Clearly referencing the outburst after that goal, Neville has taken aim at Arsenal supporters by comparing that incident with Gabriel's first goal.
