Speaking at his presentation, Gennaro Gattuso has revealed that he must finish in the top four in Ligue 1 in order to remain at Olympique de Marseille next season.
Gattuso’s arrival at Marseille was confirmed on Wednesday. The former AC Milan, Napoli and Valencia manager succeeds Marcelino, who departed the club a week earlier amidst tensions with supporter groups. The Spaniard only oversaw seven official matches with Les Phocéens.
Gattuso will oversee his first match as Marseille manager on Saturday when his side make the trip to face AS Monaco. The Italian is seen as a “firefighter” appointment. It has been reported, notably by L’Équipe, that Gattuso’s contract ends at the end of the season.
He has now divulged the specificities of his deal with Les Phocéens in a presentation conference, transcribed by RMC Sport. “The watchword is Europe. I have a contract extension that is linked to Europe (qualification for the Champions League) so I have an interest in finishing in the top four, otherwise, I go back home,” said Gattuso.
This season, four French teams qualify for the Champions League, rather than three, as has previously been the case. Marseille sit eighth in Ligue 1 after six matches but are just two points off fourth-placed Monaco.
