Gennaro Gattuso is expected to be named as Olympique de Marseille’s new manager later on Wednesday, according to Foot Mercato.
Marseille have been in the market for a replacement for Marcelino, who left the club last Wednesday. The Spaniard, who only managed seven matches for Les Phocéens, left following insulting and threatening remarks from supporter groups. Pablo Longoria also temporarily stepped back from his role as president following the remarks, which were made during a meeting between supporters and the club’s hierarchy on Monday.
Christophe Galtier, who has been without a job since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season, had looked to be the favourite. Foot Mercato’s Sébastien Denis says that whilst Galtier, a Marseillais himself, was the priority, his non-sporting issues (the ongoing investigation into racist remarks allegedly made during his time at OGC Nice), his recent history with PSG, the mixed reaction from fans and the urgent need to fill the position have led OM to hire Gattuso.
Gattuso should be imminently appointed as Marseille manager on Wednesday, before taking his first training session with the club ahead of Saturday’s match against AS Monaco. The Italian manager almost joined rivals Olympique Lyonnais earlier in September, but an adverse reaction to the potential appointment, both internally and externally, led John Textor to opt for Fabio Grosso.
