Harry Kane admits that Bayern Munich progressing in the Champions League could have a detrimental effect on Tottenham qualifying for next season's premier European competition.
The England skipper, who emerged from Spurs academy to become their best-ever scorer with 280 goals, switched allegiance to Bayern last summer in a record-breaking €100million (£86.4m) deal to get his hands on major titles. However, Kane's plan has hit a snag with Bayern going through a tough spell, losing their Bundesliga supremacy to Bayer Leverkusen and now banking on the Champions League for any silverware this term.
Should Bayern prevail over Arsenal and if Leverkusen manage to eliminate West Ham from the Europa League, Germany could potentially scoop up the additional Champions League berth given to the nation boasting superior UEFA co-efficiency ranking. This would be a blow to fifth-in-the-league Tottenham.
Quizzed about this tricky situation during his pre-Arsenal press conference ahead of Wednesday's second leg, Kane confessed: «I don't really know how to answer that! What will be, will be. I can't control other things outside of that.
»Of course, I know there will be a lot of Spurs fans watching hoping Bayern Munich go through tomorrow night. I can't focus on that. All I can do is try and beat the team in front of us, and that's Arsenal."
Despite Bayern's overall struggles this season, Kane has been in stellar form, netting an impressive 39 goals across all competitions, maintaining a goal-per-game average, reports the Mirror. Reflecting on past heartbreaks, Kane, who experienced defeat with Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool, expressed his eagerness for redemption with Bayern.
