PGMOL chief Howard Webb has claimed he was «surprised» by comments over the refereeing decisions that took some of the headlines after Arsenal's clash with Manchester United.
The Gunners played out a feisty tie with the Red Devils at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon, which had plenty of twists and turns in store. The away side took the lead through Marcus Rashford, butMartin Odegaard found an instant reply to take the game level into the halfway point.
Kai Havertz appeared to win a penalty, but following a VAR check, the decision was overturned and play had to continue. United thought they won it late as Alejandro Garnacho bounded through on goal, finishing beyondAaron Ramsdale to jubilant scenes. However, another check saw it ruled out for a narrow offside.
Down the other end, Arsenal turned the tables asDeclan Rice's strike from a corner found the back of the net and it was the home side that then celebrated. As the game turned even more chaotic, Gabriel Jesus was fed through on goal and after faking a shot to get beyond Diogo Dalot, he added a third to seal the victory.
After the game, Man United boss Erik ten Hag wasn't best pleased with any of the refereeing decisions that went against his team in the post-match press conference. «I thought we played a very good game but everything went against us,» the Dutch coach said. «It was not offside [for Garnacho]. It was the wrong angle. It was a penalty on [Rasmus] Hojlund, then we concede a goal that's a foul on Jonny Evans [for the Rice goal] — clear and obvious.»
