The Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool added significant pressure on to Mauricio Pochettino's shoulders as Chelsea boss. The Blues have had an indifferent Premier League campaign this season, sitting 11th in the table, but a trophy would have made things so much rosier.
However, the Blues could not see off Liverpool's young guns, with a Virgil van Dijk header two minutes from the end of extra-time securing the first piece of silverware of the season. That defeat has led to damning criticism of Chelsea, particularly given the money that has been spent on transfers in recent windows.
Gary Neville described them as the «blue billion-pound bottlejobs» in the immediate aftermath of the Wembley Stadium spectacle. And if Pochettino was not under pressure already, it certainly ramped up with that defeat.
The Blues reacted with a 3-2 win over Leeds United to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and they will return to Premier League action this weekend when they make the short trip to Brentford, aiming to move up the table with three points in their outside hopes of a European place.
Sacking Pochettino has been on the lips of many supporters at various stages this season, but former Blues defender Frank Leboeuf does not think it is the right call.
Speaking to BetVictor he said: «I don’t believe that it would be a good thing for Chelsea to get rid of Pochettino. Chelsea have changed the coach because of poor results for a few years now, but the fact is that they don’t have the players to produce results right now.
