Malo Gusto (20) is having a breakout season in the Premier League with Chelsea. With the continued absence of Reece James, the Lyon-born right-back has established himself as a serious contender to take over the position on a permanent basis. This week, he spoke to Le Parisien about his journey so far.
Due to his sparking club form, the former Olympique Lyonnais man has emerged as a candidate for Didier Deschamps’ national team squad, starting with Thursday’s announcement for this month’s friendlies against Germany and Chile. Despite the clamour for his inclusion, he is relaxed at the prospect:
“Of course I’ll keep an eye on it, but it won’t be the end of the world if I’m not called up. If I am, it’ll mean I am doing well and showing what I’m capable of. If I’m not, it means I still have work to do. Good things come to those who wait!
Gusto made his debut for L’Équipe de France 2-1 win in the over the Netherlands in Euro 2024 qualifying back in October, playing 17 minutes in the victory in Amsterdam:
” I was very proud to wear the shirt for the first time, especially for such a big match. It was a good debut, although there were things I should’ve done better. I think I made certain choices with the emotion of someone on their debut. For example, I can remember that offensively and defensively I should’ve been tougher and fairer. These are details that I will need to improve next time.
It’s important to constructively criticise oneself, that’s how you progress. It’s my way to evaluate the things I do well and determine the things I need to improve. After games, it’s important to look at my performances in a critical regard.
