Kaka has revealed why he snubbed Chelsea in favour of Real Madrid despite the attraction of working with Carlo Ancelotti. The 41-year-old, who announced his retirement from football seven years ago, left AC Milan to join Los Blancos in July 2009 for an eye-watering €67 million (£57.8m).
Kaka featured 120 times for Real Madrid, scoring 29 goals and providing 39 assists. During a four-year stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, he helped the Spanish giants win La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and Supercopa de España before returning to the San Siro.
After only a year back at AC Milan, Kaka jetted off to the United States and signed for Orlando City. Arriving in the summer, the former Brazil international joined the MLS outfit during the off-season so he stayed at Sao Paulo on loan until December.
Kaka spent three years in the States before eventually hanging up his boots. The Brazilian maestro etched himself into the history books, for club and country, but his career could have been all so different had he joined Chelsea instead of Real Madrid.
Speaking on Spanish radio station Cadena Cope in November 2009, Kaka revealed Ancelotti almost lured him to Stamford Bridge. As quoted by the Daily Mail, he said: «It came to a point where it was better for both Milan and I to part. When Milan opened the doors for me it was a sign.
»I no longer shared the same motives as the team. And if there came a day when I had to leave Milan, I had always wanted to play in Madrid. I was able to go with Ancelotti to Chelsea, but I told him it was my dream to go to Madrid."
