Alex Ferguson still hasn’t let go of his one career regret.
The legendary Scot, who has a record 13 Premier League titles to his name, is adamant he could have picked up an extra Champions League trophy with Manchester United.
Three-time European Cup winners, United have twice lost the final, both occasions coming against Barcelona.
The first of which in Rome saw Pep Guardiola take down the legendary manager 2-0 in just his first season of football as a coach, but Ferguson earned himself a shot at revenge two years later.
However, despite the home support in London at Wembley, it was Guardiola who came out on top again, with Lionel Messi at his very best.
The Argentine World Cup winning captain scored a stunning go-ahead goal and left United’s world-class defence in tatters on numerous occasions in a 3-1 victory.
Ferguson had spotted a solution to stopping a player who was gaining a reputation for being one of the greatest of all-time, but Wayne Rooney’s 37th minute equaliser after Pedro’s opener changed things.
Speaking to his former captain Gary Neville, Ferguson said: “That’s where I lost the final against Barcelona at Wembley. I should have changed at half-time and put Ji-Sung Park on Messi. That was a mistake.
“I realised after 10 minutes… I was going to do it at half-time and I said well if we could just equalise before half-time they might see the game differently and we may grow into the game better.
“We were actually quite good in the last 10 minutes of that half anyway, we came into it and we could have been in front actually. But if I’d played Ji-Sung Park against Messi, I think we’d have beaten them. I really do.
