When the Premier League announced their new bumper streaming deal on Monday, I was disappointed to see that Amazon Prime were not set to air any games over the next few seasons as their coverage is often a breath of fresh air.
Sky Sports and TNT Sports are of course the heavyweights when it comes to providing top-level football coverage but there is something quite quirky about how Amazon deliver their programming. Whether it be the wide variety of pundits on hand to deliver expert opinions or the vibrant colour schemes used, watching sports on Amazon is often quite the experience.
Hearing Ally McCoist's dulcet tones on commentary is always a joy and the panel featuring Gabby Logan, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer and Roberto Martinez provided the perfect balance during Tuesday night's coverage of Luton Town vs Arsenal. Football fans very rarely tune in for pre-match build up and often turn off for post-match analysis, however CBS Sports on their Champions League shows not only provide viewers with superb tactical breakdowns but also topics of conversation that will make people laugh.
Amazon conduct themselves in a much more mainstream manner but there is a clear difference in their coverage when compared to TNT and Sky and while watching Luton take on Arsenal there were three things that impressed me.
Punditry panel and commentary
Seeing the likes of Shearer, Henry and Martinez all pitch side offering their views is a rather refreshing balance when put into perspective. While Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch on one side and Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville on another certainly have their place, having the exact same panels for certain games can often make viewers tune out, but that rarely happens on Amazon
