Ian Maatsen's Chelsea release clause and Borussia Dortmund transfer option explained

Ian Maatsen's future at Chelsea remains unclear as he continues to enjoy his loan spell with Borussia Dortmund.

Maatsen left the Blues in the January transfer window to join Dortmund on loan for the second half of the season. The left-back had made just 15 appearances for Chelsea before he completed his move to the Bundesliga.

Tuesday night will see Maatsen look to help Dortmund reach the Champions League final. The German club face Paris Saint-Germain in their semi-final second leg and hold a 1-0 lead going into the fixture at the Parc des Princes in the French capital.

Maatsen has made five appearances in the Champions League since joining Dortmund in January. Reports in recent weeks have claimed that the Bundesliga club would be interested in signing Maatsen on a permanent deal this summer when he returns to Stamford Bridge.

Before he joined Dortmund on loan, Maatsen signed a new contract with Chelsea that runs until the summer of 2026. As part of the extension, Maatsen's fresh terms are now thought to include a release clause.

Maatsen is thought to have a release clause worth £35 million in his new deal with Chelsea. Reports in recent months have suggested that the Blues would only allow the left-back to leave the club this summer on a permanent basis if the clause was to be paid in full.
