Arsenal's squad depth will be put to the test this season as they continue to fight on all fronts for trophies and success come the end of it. Mikel Arteta's vision of having strong options in every position has often led to questions over the team, but he has largely been the beneficiary of such decisions.
This has been no more evident than his recent use of defenderTakehiro Tomiyasu, a player that continues to have an impact on the side whenever he can. His introduction from the bench against Manchester City and Chelsea turned the tie around as he took over from Oleksandr Zinchenko.
The Japanese international not only improved the side, but he played a direct hand in the winner against City after joining the attack and winning a header that kept them in the opposition half to score. Whilst in a team full of superstars that continue to exert their influence, Tomiyasu has often been that reliable force.
He would prove to be that once again in the clash with Sevilla in the Champions League as he made the team ahead of Zinchenko. A two-goal lead in the second half was brought back to just one and with the Gunners defending for their lives in Spain, Tomiyasu's inclusion helped see out the victory.
It was a moment marked by the player of the match award by the club, with many fans ranting and raving about his performance. That included some supporters calling for a new contract for the defender, with his current deal running until 2025 with reports of an extra year extension available.
