Inigo Martinez is slowly adapting to life at FC Barcelona, making only his 6th start of the campaign in Sunday's 2-1 win over Alaves at the Estadio Olimpico de Montjuic.
But at 32, the Basque defender has essential experience in La Liga, as he proved last weekend when he ran to the defence of his young team-mate Lamine Yamal, who had been tackled by opponents after a dribble.
Present at a press conference with the Spanish national team on Tuesday, the Barca player recalled the incident in which he pushed Blanco away from Yamal, before saying a few unkind words to him in the tension of the match.
"These are match situations where everyone defends their own. There was already another action before this one that I had seen, and it was time to stop that. Experienced opponents provoke a very young player, and he has to understand that if they bother him, it's not for nothing, it's because he's very good," admitted the former Bilbao player.
"They're trying to distract him, so the aim for me was to get him out of there. It's true that there are a few insults coming out that I don't like to see, but these are things that happen very quickly on a pitch," he concluded.
