West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse said he felt he made a “dream debut” for West Ham against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
The 28-year-old set-piece specialist joined the Hammers last week for £30million, leaving boyhood club Southampton and returning to the Premier League after suffering relegation with Saints last season.
David Moyes put Ward-Prowse straight into the action on Sunday for the visit of Chelsea, naming him in the starting XI to take on the Blues in east London. The new signing wasted little time in showing what he can do in a West Ham shirt, swinging an inch-perfect corner into the Chelsea box on seven minutes that Nayef Aguerd headed home for 1-0.
He then showed his eye for a defence-splitting pass from open play during the second half when he played Michail Antonio through on goal from his own half before the Hammers striker produced a devastating finish to re-establish the lead after Carney Chukwuemeka’s equaliser.
The win was then wrapped up in stoppage time as Lucas Paqueta fired a penalty past Robert Sanchez for 3-1, ensuring Ward-Prowse got his West Ham career off to the best possible start.
“It was a fantastic day, a dream debut in many ways,” said the Hammers’ No 7 at full-time. “It was an incredible atmosphere and a real honour and pleasure to play in this stadium in front of so many fans, and to get a positive result was huge for us and you could see how much it meant to everybody at the end.
