As Arsenal’s most powerful men descended on the LA Rams’ training base, the comparisons were clear.
Co-chair Josh Kroenke, CEO Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Edu had arrived, and light-hearted comments followed about hoping the base’s magic would rub off on Arsenal, with Stan Kroenke’s NFL team having won the Super Bowl in February last year.
The two sides have a clear alignment. In the Rams’ case, Stan invested $5billion (£3.9bn) to build the SoFi Stadium and, in turn, moved the team from St Louis to Los Angeles in 2016.
Fans were in uproar at the time, but now bask in the glory of a first championship in more than 20 years after much investment in the team.
For Arsenal, the Kroenke family are throwing their weight behind winning the Premier League and have spent more than £200million this summer.
Talk around the camp has centred on achieving that feat, rather than being proud of finishing second last season. The main task for executives now is to seek deals for the players who are surplus to requirements.
There is a clear understanding between manager Mikel Arteta and the board that the squad is bloated, and Arsenal need to recoup funds following the summer splurge.
Arteta said on Wednesday that having 30 players in this touring squad alone was ‘unsustainable’. There will be departures before the window closes, and possibly a couple of loan moves out of the club.
The US tour has largely been a success and the players have enjoyed the freedom they have been given. In Washington, for example, they were free to explore the city with little interruption.
The location also coincides with the club’s aim to expand its US reach.
