Kyle Walker has admitted that Manchester City are yet to step out of Manchester United’s shadow.
City have been the Premier League’s most dominant force for a decade and have won five of the last six titles under Pep Guardiola. Last season, they painted Manchester blue after emulating United’s unique 1999 Treble - and are on course to finish above their greatest rivals for the 12 successive season.
But United have won 13 titles during the Premier League era and 20 overall. They have been European champions three times. And while City can become the first English club to lift the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, European Super Cup and the Club World Cup in the same year by beating Fluminense of Brazil in Saudi Arabia this week, the Blues’ captain insists that the balance of power has not yet shifed.
Walker said: “To be considered the best club in the world is obviously a great achievement, but the lads know that we’re just starting the building blocks for this club. I don’t think we’ll be looked at differently for a good couple of years.
“We need to go and do it, like your Manchester Uniteds, with your Ryan Giggs’, winning 13 Premier Leagues. To do what we’ve done, we take great pride in that. We’ve won five titles in six years, but to be recognised as one of the top clubs in the world we have to do it for a little bit longer.
"This club has won Premier League's in the past, but to do it in the dominant way we've done in recent years hasn't been done here before. Hopefully, we are starting to see a new generation. We've started a path for youngsters to come through - the likes of Phil Foden and Rico Lewis - and they can go on to emulate what we've been doing over the last few years."
