Game of the week: Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique de Marseille, Sunday 19:45 (UK)
It’s a week od derbies in Ligue 1. Monaco and Nice get things underway in the Derby de la Côte d’Azur on Friday night, where more than local pride is on the line. Monaco will be looking to retain top spot, but should Nice win, they will deprive their local rivals of top spot. It is the league’s best attack versus the best defence, making the tie perfectly poised. On Sunday afternoon, Metz face Strasnourg in the Derby de l’Est. The former have surpassed expectations thus far, the latter arguably haven’t lived up to the hype following significant summer investment. Defeat for Strasbourg could elicit questions over Patrick Vieira’s role at the club. PSG and Marseille then take the headline slot. The former lost to Nice last weekend but bounced back well to beat Borussia Dortmund in midweek. The latter are in complete turmoil. Marcelino left the club in midweek due to tensions with the club’s fans, whilst amidst an atmosphere of intimidation, Pablo Longoria and other club executives have taken a step back, at least temporarily. Not the ideal preparation for a Le Classique. Logically, there can only be one winner, but stranger things have happened in this iconic fixture.
Raphaël’s full predictions:
Monaco 1-1 Nice
Nantes 1-2 Lorient
Brest 1-1 Lyon
Metz 1-2 Strasbourg
Lens 1-0 Toulouse
Le Havre 2-0 Clermont
Montpellier
